Travel to Iceland and local transport
By plane
You should arrive at Keflavík (Reykjavík) International Airport with the identification code KEF. Icelandair offers direct flights from many destinations, but you can use many other airlines. Most flights from continental Europe land at KEF in the late evening or around midnight.
Once you arrive at Keflavík International Airport (KEF), you will need to take a bus to Reykjavík BSÍ (central bus station). The most convenient way is to book the “flybus”. You can do it online here https://www.re.is/tour/flybus/.
NOTE: We recommend buying a return journey from Reykjavík to Keflavík as you get a discount for buying both transfers in one package. The schedule is flexible, and you can modify your booking after purchase according to your needs. You can also always buy Flybus tickets after your arrival at the airport in the arrival hall.
Flybus service is connected to all arrivals to KEF at any time of the day or night.
Travel to your hotel from BSÍ (central bus station) in Reykjavík can be easy:
- RECOMMENDED: Use Flybus+ and when ordering your Flybus, order your transfer directly to your hotel for a minor extra fee. When ordering a ticket online, you need to choose your hotel. If buying Flybus ticket after arrival at the arrival hall at KEF, tell the local staff your hotel name.
- Take local public transport from BSÍ to the nearest bus stop. For detailed route planning, use Google Maps or https://www.straeto.is/en.

By ferry
A more sustainable option to flying is to take the Norröna ferry from northern Denmark (port of Hirtshals) via the Faroe Islands to the Eastern Iceland port of Seyðisfjörður.
You can book your ticket at https://www.smyrilline.com/iceland/
NOTE:
- The cruise takes approximately 50 hours, and it includes two nights on board the ferry.
- Seyðisfjörður is on the other side of Iceland; unless you brought your own car, you need to take a bus from Seyðisfjörður to the regional capital of East Iceland, Egilstadir, and from there a bus to Reykjavík (approximately 10 hours journey with a change in Akureyri).
- Alternatively, you can take a domestic flight from Egilstadir to Reykjavík... see the Icelandair website for schedule and prices.
Local public transport from your hotel to the staff training venue
You can use the public transport, Straeto:
From Fosshotel Baron and Fosshotel Lind: take bus No. 5 from Laugavegur to Gamla Hringbraut, and change to bus No. 8 to HR
From Reykjavík Marina Hotel: take bus No. 3 from Mýrargata to Gamla Hringbraut, and change there for bus No. 8 to HR
It is possible to pay with a card; board the bus by the front door only.
Use local taxi to reach the staff training venue
In Iceland, there is no Uber or Bolt available. The local alternative is called Hopp, and its app is easy to use, and the service is reliable.
Download mobile app at https://hopp.bike/taxi
Hopp is also offering electric scooters for short term rent, as you may be used to in other cities.
A traditional taxi is also available

Transfer from Reykjavík to Hvanneyri
On Tuesday, June 16th, the bus transfer is arranged for both the pre-event participants and those who will join the main training beginning on Wednesday in Hvanneyri.
Arranged buses will depart at 13:30 (June 16th) from the parking space in front of Reykjavík University.
This transfer is covered by the registration fee, and there is no additional charge.
If necessary, there is also a public bus service operating between Reykjavík and Borgarnes:
Travel from BSÍ to Mjódd bus station in Reykjavík or travel to and change at Artun stop to bus No. 57. Take bus No. 3 from Gamla Hringbraut to Mjódd bus station, see https://www.straeto.is/en/route-planner/search/a0c7fc026cbb/0 and take bus 57 to Borgarnes from there OR take bus 5 or 15 from Gamla Hringbraut to Artun and change to 57 there, see https://maps.app.goo.gl/WRc7q7x2PwpGweN47
NOTE: You can buy tickets on the bus from the drivers by card.
NOTE II: If you show the ticket you bought on bus 3, 5, or 15 to get to Mjódd or Artun, to the bus driver of 57, the price of the ticket to Borgarnes will be lower, as you will already be covered for the territory of the capital city area.
NOTE III: If you will arrive in Borgarnes by bus 57, we need to arrange a pick-up service by car from Borgarnes to Hvanneyri (approx. 15 minutes ride), and you need to let us know ahead of time by phone call or email!
You can always easily check the best connection to Borgarnes on https://www.straeto.is/en.
Renting a car in Iceland and local bus services
If you are considering renting a car, use more well-known car rental companies like Budget, Avis, Blue Car Rental and similar... All major brands have their cars available at KEF airport. Alternatively, you can also rent a car from the city of Reykjavík.
Beware of unusual rules concerning roundabouts and the right of way in Iceland; see the video on the left!
You can always travel around by local buses, but be aware that local bus schedules are not very frequent and tickets are quite expensive.
